The Kansas City Current are preparing to make their already successful home even bigger. CPKC Stadium, the first venue built specifically for a professional women’s sports team, has quickly become one of the NWSL’s most sought-after destinations. With thousands of fans waiting for tickets, the club is now considering a major expansion that could add 6,500 seats. Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes are part of the Current’s ownership group, while Chris and Angie Long privately financed the stadium’s construction.
KC Current look to expand CPKC Stadium
When Chris and Angie Long began planning a dedicated home for the Kansas City Current, there was no obvious blueprint to follow. NWSL teams had traditionally shared venues with men’s clubs, leaving the owners to rethink what a women’s soccer stadium could look like.They opted for a smaller setting with 11,500 seats, taking inspiration from compact venues known for intense atmospheres. The idea was simple: create a ground where supporters felt close to the action and demand for tickets remained strong.That strategy quickly paid off.CPKC Stadium opened in March 2024 as Kansas City’s enthusiasm for women’s soccer was growing. The Current then made league history by selling out every home match during their opening season at the venue.The club’s ticket demand has remained strong. Its season-ticket base now stands at about 8,000, while more than 5,000 people are reportedly waiting for an opportunity to secure tickets. Only a limited number of seats are available for individual matches.The stadium’s premium spaces have also attracted strong demand. All 12 luxury suites, which require long-term commitments, sold out within roughly two weeks.

The success has created a problem many sports owners would welcome, but it is still a problem. A stadium designed to feel intimate is struggling to accommodate everyone who wants to attend.Chris Long acknowledged the tension between maintaining scarcity and allowing more supporters through the gates.“Sometimes scarcity is a really, really good thing, but sometimes it puts people off, too,” says Chris Long, who in addition to owning the Current serves as chairman and CEO of Palmer Square Capital Management, the investment firm he cofounded with his wife that has more than $36 billion in assets under management and is based just across the Kansas border in Mission Woods. “We want to get more people in the tent.”The proposed addition of 6,500 seats would significantly increase capacity while allowing the Current to preserve the identity that helped make CPKC Stadium successful.For the ownership group, including Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, the expansion could also mark another stage in the rapid growth of the Kansas City Current and the wider business of women’s professional soccer.The challenge will be balancing greater access with the close, energetic atmosphere that made the stadium such a draw in the first place.
