NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokesperson Saurav Das has accused Delhi Police of refusing to register an FIR against ACP Vivek Bhagat over what he described as the alleged sexual assault of an independent journalist, and set a deadline of noon on October 4 for the case to be registered.Das said he and CJP leader Ratna Singh had approached the police after learning about the allegation and warned that the journalist community and other protesters would return to the police station if an FIR was not filed.Speaking about the matter, Das alleged that several protesters and journalists had already been demonstrating outside the police station and repeatedly asking police to register an FIR.“The police is adamant that they will not lodge any FIR. But we want to ask the Delhi Police that why are you protecting such a monster who has done sexual assault in the public view? Why are you defending such a monster? What is so special about ACP Vivek Bhagat because of whom you are protecting him so much?” Das said.He alleged that police had been told that they could take time to examine video footage if required, but said the protesters expected an FIR to be registered by noon on October 4.“We have told them that if you want time to watch the video then you can take time, but tomorrow (i.e. today, October 4) you will have time till 12. And after that the entire journalist community and the other protesters will come in the support of the police again outside the police station and will take a copy of the FIR,” Das said.He added, “We will ensure that this ACP Vivek Bhagat, who is a monster in his uniform, gets a FIR against him.”
CJP protests against Gyanesh Kumar continue
The latest demand comes amid CJP-led protests in Delhi against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.Delhi Police on Saturday registered three FIRs in connection with the October 2 protests by student organisations, political parties and civil society activists who attempted to gather at Jantar Mantar. No individual or organisation was named as an accused in those FIRs, police said.CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has since announced a fresh mobilisation in Delhi on October 10, saying the group would bring young Indians to the capital and march to Jantar Mantar. The CJP has also faced police action over its October 2 protest in Mumbai, with an FIR registered against organisers and 400-500 unidentified supporters over alleged unlawful assembly, traffic disruption and use of loudspeakers without permission.
CJP has earlier raised police-action allegations
The latest allegation follows other complaints by CJP supporters over police conduct during recent protests. The party had previously sought stricter charges in a case involving injuries allegedly sustained by a CJP supporter during a Jantar Mantar protest.Police have also faced allegations of excessive force during the recent protests, including an AAP-shared video that purportedly showed a Delhi Police officer punching a detained protester.(With agency inputs)
