Ralf Schumacher has raised concerns about the growing lack of opportunities for young drivers in Formula 1. The former F1 driver believes veterans such as Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton continuing to race into their 40s could make it harder for rising stars to reach the top level.Schumacher has questioned the future of Formula 2 if established drivers continue competing for so long. He believes the sport must consider how its current stars’ longevity affects junior champions waiting for their chance.

Ralf Schumacher says F1 should shut down F2 if veterans race until 45

Ralf Schumacher believes Formula 1’s growing number of experienced drivers is creating a bottleneck for young talent. He made his position clear while discussing the careers of Alonso, Hamilton and other veterans.“If everyone races until they are 45, we can actually close F2 down. At some point, there is simply no room left for the young drivers”, he said. The German acknowledged that seeing older drivers remain competitive is impressive. However, he believes their extended careers can also create an unfair situation for younger racers hoping to secure an F1 seat.Schumacher pointed to the careers of Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen while explaining his concerns. Both drivers entered Formula 1 at a young age. He questioned what would happen if the current generation followed Alonso and Hamilton by continuing to race well into their 40s.He added, “It was like that a very, very long time ago, until Michael effectively entered Formula 1 and proved what fitness and youth can achieve in combination. Training was redefined back then – and, to be fair, it was down to him. Then that trend carried on, and Michael [Schumacher] was the exception in that he actually made a comeback. Today, Nico Hulkenberg is approaching 40, Lewis Hamilton is over 40, Alonso too. It’s all great; I think it’s lovely that the drivers are staying in Formula 1 for so long.”Despite appreciating their longevity, Schumacher believes the sport must also consider the drivers waiting in the junior categories.“I’d say I still find it a bit unfair, also towards the next generation. I mean, look at the drivers – when did Kimi Antonelli start, or Max Verstappen – when did he start? If you really think it through, if they were to carry on racing until they’re 45, then you might as well shut down Formula 2 straight away”, he continued.Formula 2 is designed to prepare young drivers for Formula 1. However, winning the championship does not guarantee an immediate promotion.Gabriel Bortoleto secured an F1 seat after winning the 2024 F2 championship. Several other champions have had to wait longer for their opportunities.Schumacher has also questioned whether modern F1 cars make it easier for older drivers to remain competitive. He believes the focus on tyre and energy management can reduce the need to push at the physical limit throughout every lap.
