'Victory sign, love song and murder': Video captures Punjab woman's final moments with ex-husband

FAZILKA: An Instagram reel showing a smiling couple spending time together and a man flashing a victory sign has emerged as a chilling piece of evidence in a murder case from Punjab’s Fazilka district. What appeared to be a happy moment between the couple allegedly turned into a horrific crime minutes later, according to police.The video, recorded shortly before the woman’s alleged killing, showed Saroj and her divorced husband Gurmeet Singh together, with a song playing in the background. The reel, posted on Saroj’s Instagram account, featured the song ‘Yaad teri ban gayi sajna ve sade seene ch nasoor’ (“Memories of you have become a festering wound in my heart”), while Gurmeet can be seen making a victory sign.According to police, after meeting Saroj, Gurmeet took her to an isolated location near bushes and allegedly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon before burying her body in a pit in an attempt to destroy evidence.A goatherd grazing animals nearby reportedly heard Saroj’s screams and rushed towards the spot. The accused allegedly fled after noticing someone approaching. The goatherd later informed villagers, who alerted the police.The victim, identified as Saroj (42), was allegedly murdered by Gurmeet, who police said had called her for a meeting on the pretext of reconciliation. The incident took place in Jandwala Mira Sangla village in Fazilka district.Saroj had been living with her parents for around two years after her divorce from Gurmeet. Police said he contacted her, expressing a desire to revive their relationship and live together again.Police later exhumed the body and sent it to Fazilka Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Gurmeet was arrested from the village.
