VIJAYAWADA: A wedding steeped in Telugu tradition, complete with elaborate rituals, traditional cuisine, vibrant décor and age-old customs, no longer requires a journey back to India. For Telugu families in the United States, recreating the quintessential wedding back home has become increasingly convenient, with almost every service and ritual requirement available locally — from purohits and wedding planners to caterers, photographers, mehndi artists and entertainment providers.

Texas emerges as a Telugu wedding hub

This growing ecosystem, coupled with visa-related challenges and the sizeable Telugu population in parts of the US, is turning Texas into a preferred destination for Telugu weddings.Austin, Frisco, Dallas and their surrounding areas are increasingly finding favour with families from across the country looking to celebrate marriages without the complications of travelling to India.

A booming business

The trend has given rise to a wedding economy of its own. Affluent Telugu non-resident Indians (NRIs), some of whom own extensive tracts of farmland, are converting parts of their properties into resorts and wedding venues. A few of these sprawling properties extend over 100 acres, offering not just space for elaborate ceremonies and receptions but also recreational facilities that make them attractive destinations for families and guests.

From purohits to caterers, everything under one roof

Beyond the venues, the availability of end-to-end wedding services is making the arrangements considerably easier. Wedding planners are bringing together purohits, decorators, caterers, photographers, DJs, makeup artists, mehndi specialists and suppliers of traditional wedding essentials, allowing families to organise elaborate ceremonies without having to source each service independently. For Telugu families living in states where the community is relatively small, Texas offers an additional advantage, as friends and relatives are often already based in the region. This makes it easier for guests to travel, attend the ceremonies and participate in the celebrations, while allowing families to retain the scale and social warmth traditionally associated with Telugu weddings.G Sumanth of Denton said the wedding-services business is booming as more Telugu marriages are being conducted in the US. The trend, he said, is creating opportunities across the sector, benefiting everyone from purohits and caterers to professional photographers and decorators. The shift is also influencing matchmaking preferences. S Mohana Krishna of Michigan said some families and prospective couples were increasingly looking for matches among Telugu people already settled in the US. With couples keen to avoid the uncertainties associated with international travel and the process of returning to America after a wedding in India, finding a match within the country is becoming an attractive option.

Keeping age-old customs alive on American soil

For guests attending these celebrations, the experience can be remarkably close to that of a wedding in India. V Swathi, who recently attended a Telugu wedding in the US, said she was struck by how faithfully the family had followed every ritual. “I did not find any difference between a wedding in India and the one I attended in the US. They performed every ritual religiously without missing anything. Even in India, we sometimes struggle to procure all the articles needed for a traditional wedding, but I was amazed to see that they had arranged everything in the US,” she said. From raw turmeric roots and a stone mortar and pestle to mango and banana leaves, ash gourd, betel leaves and betel nuts, every item required for the ceremonies had been arranged, Swathi added. The attention to detail underscores how the Telugu diaspora is adapting to life in America without letting go of traditions that remain central to family and community life. With venues, vendors and ritual essentials increasingly available under one roof — or within easy reach — the distance from India is proving less of a barrier than it once was.The address may be in Texas, but the rituals, the food and the spirit of the celebration remain unmistakably Telugu.
