NEW DELHI: The long-awaited 666-bed super speciality block at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital has secured fire safety clearance, bringing the Rs 482-crore facility a step closer to becoming operational and expanding access to specialised treatment at the Central government-run hospital. The 11-storey block will add 666 beds to the hospital’s existing capacity of 1,538, taking the total to 2,204. It will house 18 operation theatres, 99 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, 196 high dependency unit (HDU) beds and three catheterisation laboratories.

The facility will strengthen treatment in oncology, oncosurgery, hepatology, gastrointestinal surgery and liver transplantation. It will also have two linear accelerators for cancer treatment and a nuclear medicine department equipped with positron emission tomography (PET) scan facilities. The fire safety clearance removes a key hurdle to commissioning the facility, which is expected to expand the hospital’s capacity to handle complex cases and provide critical care. The timeline for making the block operational, however, has not been specified. The development comes as Union health minister JP Nadda reviewed healthcare services and infrastructure development at RML Hospital on Friday, emphasising patient-centric care and wider access to advanced medical facilities.Once operational, the new block is expected to significantly expand RML Hospital’s tertiary care capacity, catering to patients from Delhi and neighbouring states.
