HYDERABAD: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday has issued a notice to the Telangana government after receiving a complaint alleging that a private educational institution in Hyderabad made Islamic religious lessons and prayers compulsory for students.According to the complaint, “Success the Junior College” in Saidabad, Hyderabad, allegedly assigned Islamic religious lessons and prayers as mandatory homework through official school diaries.Taking cognisance of the matter, an NHRC bench headed by member Priyank Kanoongo sought a response from the Telangana government.The complainant alleged that the institution required students to complete the religious assignments regardless of their faith. The NHRC has asked the state authorities to look into the allegations and submit a report.Hyderabad school sacks teacher after alleged Islamic homework given to student The controversy over alleged religious homework assigned to a Hindu Class 2 student at a private school in Hyderabad intensified on Thursday after photographs of the student’s homework diary went viral on social media.The diary pages, dated July 11, allegedly show the homework entries “Read 1,2 Kalma” and “Read Surah Fateha” under the subject “Deeniyath”, alongside assignments for subjects such as Mathematics and Computer. The pages also purportedly bear the teacher’s signatures.The controversy centres on Shaik Aisha Parveen, a teacher at Success, The School in Hyderabad’s Sayeedabad, who was terminated by the management after parents alleged that their child had been asked to recite the Kalma and Surah Fateha as part of schoolwork.In its termination letter, the school said Parveen had been dismissed with immediate effect and permanently disqualified from seeking employment at any institution under the Success Group of Education Institutions.The allegations have triggered widespread debate on social media. Authorities are yet to present their findings, and further investigation into the complaint is underway.
