Google‘s former chief scientist Jeff Dean has shared the simple steps he follows to protect his knees and ankles despite maintaining an intense weekly workout schedule. Jeff Dean, who recently resigned from Google after 27 years revealed that he relies on “squishy” running shoes, replaces them regularly and uses arch support inserts to reduce the impact of running. He also admitted that his ankles remain his biggest concern after suffering multiple basketball sprains earlier in life. The comments came after Dean shared details of his weekly fitness routine on X (formerly Twitter), where some users asked how he manages joint health while staying active.

Jeff Dean said his regular fitness schedule includes a mix of strength training, cardio and flexibility exercises throughout the week.According to his post, his routine includes:

  • Two soccer matches in a 25-and-over league
  • Two gym sessions
  • Two yoga classes
  • Three to four 8-kilometre runs to work
  • Three to four 8-kilometre bike commutes
  • One longer run or cycling session on weekends

The workout details emerged after Dean shared the calendar from his final day at Google’s office during the KDD Conference in Jeju, South Korea.

Jeff Dean’s advice for protecting knees and ankles

When an X user asked how he protects his joints while doing high-impact activities, Jeff Dean pointed to three simple habits. “Squishy running shoes and replacing the shoes pretty often and arch support inserts,” he wrote.Dean added that his ankles remain more problematic than his knees because of injuries from years of playing basketball. “It’s my ankles that are more troublesome (too many basketball sprains years ago),” he said.Jeff Dean, Google’s 30th employee and chief scientist, left the company earlier this month after 27 years to lead AI startup Discovery Loop.
