Freddie Freeman’s time with the Los Angeles Dodgers has been shaped by family experiences that go well beyond the game of baseball. The death of his mother, Rosemary Freeman, when he was 10 years old, made lasting changes to his childhood while his father, Fred Freeman, became an important figure in both his life and development as a hitter.Years later, Freeman would face another deeply personal challenge when his youngest son, Maximus, was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome in 2024. Freeman had to step down from the Los Angeles Dodgers due to the illness, but his wife, Chelsea Freeman and the family were focused on Maximus’ recovery.

Freddie Freeman’s family journey shaped his Los Angeles Dodgers career through loss, resilience and son Maximus’ recovery

Freeman’s mother, Rosemary, died of melanoma in 2000 when he was 10. Her death was one of the major events of his childhood, with his father, Fred, continuing to raise the family’s 3 sons.Baseball also became a strong connection between Freddie and his father. After school, Fred would work with his son, making batting practice a daily routine. Their sessions helped develop the opposite-field approach that became a huge part of Freeman’s swing.Freeman has also kept his mother’s memory alive through baseball. His decision to play for Team Canada internationally has been linked to his Canadian parents and his wish to keep Rosemary’s memory alive.

Freddie Freeman supported son Maximus through illness

The latest rough chapter for the Freeman family came in July 2024 when Maximus fell gravely ill. Initially diagnosed with transient synovitis, his condition rapidly deteriorated, and doctors started to suspect Guillain-Barré syndrome. The neurological illness was causing the paralysis to creep toward Maximus’ shoulders and affect his breathing. He was in hospital on a ventilator and feeding tubes while receiving intensive treatment. Freddie Freeman left the Los Angeles Dodgers on their road trip to be with his son and family.Maximus began to improve within days of intensive treatment. He eventually got out of the hospital, but his recovery involved learning basic movements all over again and continuing with physical therapy.

Freddie Freeman and Chelsea honored CHOC caregivers

This experience of the Freeman family ultimately resulted in a major donation to the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where Maximus was treated. In May 2025, after seeing the work of CHOC’s medical teams and pediatric intensive-care staff, Freddie and Chelsea Freeman announced a $1 million donation to CHOC.The donation comes after a particularly hard time for the family. Thanks to the hospital’s treatment, Maximus was able to come home. The Freemans then used their experience to help other children and families who are faced with serious medical issues.Freeman’s family story also became part of an extraordinary chapter in baseball. He returned to the Los Angeles Dodgers in August 2024 and played through an ankle injury in the postseason. Freeman hit the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history in Game 1 of the World Series against the New York Yankees.Freeman finished with 12 RBIs in the 2024 World Series, homering in each of the first four games. MLB also pointed out his six-game home-run streak in the World Series was a continuation of his 2021 postseason. But for Freeman, it was a year in which family circumstances had radically altered his perspective, which led to the baseball accomplishments. His mother’s memory, his father’s influence and Maximus’ recovery are still key chapters in the story of the Los Angeles Dodgers star’s career.
