Tesla CEO Elon Musk has cautioned that transitioning to sustainable energy alone may not be enough to protect Earth from long-term climate threats. Recently, Musk suggested that “sentient satellites” launched to Earth-Sun Lagrange points using mass drivers built on the Moon could one day regulate the planet’s temperature. He said such a system could potentially address global warming for up to 1 billion years, envisioning a future where solar-powered AI satellite constellations make fine adjustments to the amount of solar energy reaching Earth.

Musk has also warned that humanity faces threats far beyond today’s climate crisis, noting that “extremely severe extinction events happen every 100 million years or so.” He argued that simply switching to sustainable energy will not be sufficient to prevent catastrophic outcomes. “Space satellites to control temperature and massive geo-engineering will be needed or it will be game over,” Musk wrote.
‘We have about 50 years’ to act
While Musk’s vision of space-based geoengineering is long-term, he stressed the urgency of immediate action. “We have about 50 years or so to take action,” he said, pointing to risks for vulnerable coastal populations. His comments come as climate data shows sustained global warming, with Berkeley Earth estimating that 2025 was the third-warmest year on record, at about 1.44°C above the 1850–1900 average.
Climate research cuts
Musk’s warning coincides with concerns about U.S. climate research funding. Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced it would stop supporting the Arctic Report Card, an annual assessment tracking changes in the rapidly warming Arctic. The move adds to a series of actions scaling back climate research, which officials have criticised as alarmist.
