Trump’s comment as Melania signs order sparks awkward exchange

US President Donald Trump drew laughter from guests at the White House on Monday after questioning whether first lady Melania Trump’s signature ‘means anything’ as the couple signed an executive order aimed at boosting research into women’s health. The exchange took place on Monday, during an event in the Rose Garden, where the president signed an order establishing a dedicated women’s health research division at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a White House task force to address gaps in medical research. As Melania reached for her “Be Best” pen to sign the document, Trump told the gathering, “I don’t know if her signature means anything.” The comment appeared to prompt awkward laughter among some guests gathered for the ceremony. The first lady replied, “Yours is the most important,” before continuing to sign the document.Melania had launched her “Be Best” initiative during Trump’s first presidential term. The programme focused on children’s well-being, online safety and the prevention of drug abuse.Trump later appeared to admire his wife’s signature as he compared it with his own.“Oh! That looks very similar!” he said with a smile. The new initiative was championed by Melania, who has called for greater investment in research into conditions affecting women. The order is intended to promote new research, improve diagnostic technologies and expand treatment options for diseases that have historically received insufficient attention.“Beginning today we will change the reality of women’s health,” Melania said while outlining the initiative. “Previous generations fought for women’s rights. Our generation will fight to discover the cures that will ensure a woman can live her life in health and to the fullest.”Speaking after his wife, Trump said the order would “promote new research and really go after the understudied diseases affecting women”.White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and Health and Human Services secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr will lead the White House task force, according to details of the initiative. Wiles has publicly discussed completing treatment for breast cancer. The announcement follows a series of meetings between the first lady and federal health officials on improving research and care for women.
