The Sixers made the news official on Tuesday, announcing Dillon Jones’ signing in a press release after ESPN’s Dave McMenamin broke the news first. “Back-to-back champ Dillon Jones signed with the 76ers to an Exhibit 10 contract,” McMenamin wrote, adding that Jones would join Philadelphia’s training camp later this month.An Exhibit 10 deal carries no guarantees. It simply gives Philadelphia a low-risk window to evaluate Jones before deciding whether to convert him to a two-way contract or send him to the Delaware Blue Coats. For a player who has bounced through three organizations in two years, it is a familiar kind of audition.

Jones gives Philadelphia size and versatility at forward, standing 6-foot-5 and 235 pounds with the strength to guard multiple positions. His NBA numbers do not jump off the page. Across 61 combined games with Oklahoma City and New York, he has averaged just 2.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 assist in under ten minutes a night.His G League work tells a different story. Jones averaged 15.2 points, 6.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds in 18 games for the Westchester Knicks last season, shooting close to 38 percent from three after making just 27.5 percent the year before. This kind of jump is exactly what earned him a senior-year MVP award in the Big Sky Conference, where he averaged 20.8 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.2 assists at Weber State.If that shooting holds up, Philadelphia may have found a legitimate developmental piece buried inside a camp contract.

Jones barely played in either title run, appearing in just seven games and 39 minutes for the Knicks and none of them in the playoffs. Coach Mike Brown still leaned on him during the postseason. “I spoke to Dillon often during this playoff run,” Brown said on The Roommates Show, explaining that Jones had just gone through a similar run with Oklahoma City. It would be interesting to see how the Sixers will use Jones in the new season.
