OpenAI confirms ChatGPT outage

OpenAI has acknowledged the disruption on its status page, stating, “We’re currently experiencing issues.”“We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery,” the company added. The outage began within the last half hour and appears to span several regions, including North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, based on Downdetector reports. It marks another instance of ChatGPT’s service being interrupted for users who rely on it daily for tasks ranging from casual conversation to work-related queries.OpenAI’s status page has alternated between showing an active issue and showing normal operation as engineers work on a fix. This kind of inconsistency is common during login-related outages, since the sign-in system can fail even while the underlying chatbot continues to function. The company has not yet disclosed a cause or a timeline for resolution. This piece will be updated as more information becomes available.

What users have said about ChatGPT outage

Reports began surfacing on Downdetector and X (Twitter) ithin a short window this afternoon. Most accounts point to the login or authentication system rather than the chat model itself.Users describe getting stuck on a loading screen, being signed out mid-conversation, or being unable to open older chats. Both free and paid accounts appear affected, and the issue is not confined to the website, some users on the mobile app report similar login trouble.Other reported symptoms include failed logins or repeated authentication errors, chat history that does not load, sessions ending without warning, and “service unavailable” messages when sending a prompt. This is not OpenAI’s first disruption this week. Two days earlier, on July 23, a separate outage affected ChatGPT, Codex and the API, taking close to 24 hours to resolve. With this second incident following so closely, some users on social media have questioned why the service has faced repeated issues in a short span. For those currently unable to access ChatGPT, a few steps may help:

  • Refresh the page, or close and reopen the app
  • Log out and log back in rather than just refreshing
  • Check status.openai.com for updates
  • Try the mobile app if the website is not loading, or vice versa
