Tragedy struck in Kanpur as 23-year-old Anand, BTech gold medallist ended his life

KANPUR: A 23-year-old BTech gold medallist, who had unsuccessfully attempted to secure a govt job around 50 times, allegedly died by suicide at his rented house in Gujaini under Govind Nagar police station limits on Friday. In a heartbreaking suicide note, he repeatedly apologised to his father, writing, “Sorry Papa, I tried for a govt job 50 times, but I could not succeed. Please forgive me.”The incident came to light when the family’s domestic help arrived at the house, but found the door locked from inside. After receiving no response, she informed the family and the Govind Nagar police.Police broke open the door and found Anand Kumar‘s body hanging from a ceiling fan.At the time of the incident, Anand’s father and grandfather had gone to Bihar to finalise the marriage of his elder brother.Rajkumar, a native of Buxar in Bihar and a retired employee of Lohiya Private Limited, has two sons and a daughter. While Rajkumar and Anand lived in a rented house in Gujaini, his siblings are govt school teachers in Bihar.Rajkumar told police that he had left for Bihar five days back. Anand was also supposed to accompany him, but backed out at the last moment.Anand completed his BTech in electrical engineering in 2024 from a reputed engineering college in Kanpur. After securing the third rank in the state, he was awarded a gold medal by Governor Anandiben Patel during a function at the college on Aug 13, 2024.After completing his degree, Anand began preparing for competitive examinations to secure a govt job while also taking up employment in the private sector.Police said he remained under stress as he was unable to clear the examinations despite repeated attempts.Govind Nagar SHO Ashok Kumar Dubey said police recovered a five-line suicide note from the room.“The word ‘sorry’ was written seven to eight times in the note.Prima facie, police believe Anand died by suicide due to depression caused by repeated failures in securing the govt job.The body has been sent for postmortem examination, and further investigation is underway.
