Apple has added variable aperture to the main camera on both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. This will offer users a physical way to control how much light reaches the sensor for the first time on an iPhone.The feature sits alongside a new 48MP Fusion Main camera, a redesigned sensor and new Pro Controls. Apple says the six laser-cut blades inside the lens can move between four aperture settings, while the camera can also adjust the aperture automatically depending on the scene.That sounds like a minor hardware upgrade. But it is not. The lens opening affects exposure, depth of field, and how motion is captured, so giving the iPhone aperture control adds something software alone can’t quite duplicate.Apple’s description is straightforward: “iPhone 18 Pro has a new 48 megapixel fusion main camera with variable aperture for creative control that wasn’t possible before,” Apple said. “This is the most advanced camera we’ve ever made.”
Aperture is the part of a camera most phone users never see
Aperture is simply the opening through which light passes before reaching a camera’s image sensor. It is measured using f-numbers such as f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0.The lower the f-number, the wider the opening and the more light reaches the sensor. A wider aperture can therefore help in darker conditions. A narrower aperture lets in less light, but it also keeps more of the scene in focus.Most smartphone cameras use a fixed aperture. The lens has one opening, and the phone relies heavily on shutter speed, ISO, and computational photography to handle different lighting conditions.The iPhone 18 Pro changes that for its main camera. Its lens can open as wide as f/1.48 and then stop down to f/1.8, f/2.8 or f/4.0. Six blades inside the lens physically change the opening size.Apple says the blades are laser-cut and thinner than a human hair. They are designed to move smoothly between the available settings rather than simply switching between two fixed positions.The camera can make that decision automatically. In a darker scene, it can open the aperture to f/1.48 and let in more light. In brighter conditions, it can narrow the opening.
The useful bit is what happens when you take control
For most people, the automatic system will do most of the work. The Camera app can choose an aperture based on the scene, just as it already decides on exposure and other settings.The difference is that iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max owners can also take control themselves.Apple’s new Pro Controls let users manually change aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. A histogram can also be displayed to help judge exposure across a scene.That gives photographers another way to decide how a picture should look, instead of leaving every exposure decision to the camera.The most obvious example is depth of field. At a wider aperture such as f/1.48, the camera can produce more optical background blur when the subject is relatively close and the background is farther away.Stopping down to f/4.0 has the opposite effect. More of the scene can stay in focus, which can help with landscapes or group photos where people stand at different distances from the camera.That matters because a group shot can otherwise leave one person sharp while another, standing slightly farther away, falls outside the plane of focus. A narrower aperture gives the camera more room to keep those subjects in focus.It also gives photographers another option when deliberately introducing motion into an image. A narrower aperture reduces the amount of light entering the lens, making it easier to use a slower shutter speed when conditions are bright enough.
It is not just about low light
The obvious benefit of opening the aperture is light. Apple says the main camera can open to ƒ/1.48 for low-light photography, letting more light reach the sensor.That can give the camera more flexibility before it has to compensate by increasing ISO or slowing the shutter speed. In practical terms, that can help preserve detail and reduce noise, while a fast enough shutter can keep moving subjects sharp.But variable aperture is useful in the opposite direction too.In bright daylight, photographers sometimes want a slower shutter speed to create motion blur. That can be useful with moving water, people, or cars, and it also matters in video, where shutter speed is normally tied to frame rate.A fixed wide aperture can make that difficult in strong sunlight because too much light reaches the sensor even when the shutter is already operating at its fastest useful setting. Stopping the lens down gives the camera another way to reduce exposure.There are limits, though. A range ending at f/4.0 does not eliminate the need for neutral-density filters in every bright-light situation. Photographers who want long exposures in direct sunlight may still need an ND filter to cut the light further.
The aperture is only on one camera
Apple’s implementation has an important limitation. The variable aperture is on the main 24mm camera. It does not extend across the entire rear camera system.The ultra-wide and telephoto cameras don’t have the same variable-aperture mechanism. That means the new optical control is available only when shooting through the main lens.This is also why the feature should not be viewed as a replacement for the other cameras or for computational photography. Exposure, autofocus, HDR, noise reduction and image processing still determine much of the final photograph.The hardware simply gives the camera another physical variable to work with before those processes take over.
Apple is adding more control to video too
Aperture changes also feed into Apple’s video features. The new Pro Controls work with video as well as photography, letting users manually adjust settings including aperture and shutter speed. That is especially relevant for people who want more predictable exposure rather than letting the phone change settings during recording.Apple has also added the ability to apply Cinematic effects after capture to videos recorded at up to 60 frames per second. That means users can make this adjustment after recording instead of committing to the effect while shooting.Time-lapse recording now supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR, while Audio Mix has new algorithms designed to improve voice quality and isolate music.The combination is notable because Apple isn’t presenting the variable aperture as an isolated camera specification. It is part of a broader attempt to give users more control over how photos and video are captured and processed.
The idea isn’t new to smartphones
Apple is not the first phone maker to put a variable aperture in a smartphone. Samsung introduced a dual-aperture system with the Galaxy S9 series in 2018. That system switched between f/1.5 and f/2.4 depending on the lighting conditions.Huawei later introduced more flexible variable-aperture systems, while Xiaomi and Honor have also used the technology in flagship phones.The reason it has remained relatively uncommon is fairly simple: fitting a mechanical aperture mechanism into a smartphone camera adds complexity to an already tightly packed module.For years, phone makers instead concentrated on larger sensors, multiple cameras and computational photography. Those technologies can compensate for many of the limitations of a fixed aperture without adding moving parts to the lens.The iPhone 18 Pro’s approach is therefore less about replacing computational photography than adding an optical control alongside it.
The bigger camera change is the combination
The variable aperture gets most of the attention, but Apple has made several other changes to the camera system.The 48MP Fusion Main camera uses a new sensor and a new computational imaging pipeline that Apple says produces sharper, more detailed images. Photographic Styles now include additional texture and grain controls, giving users more ways to change the look of their photos.Apple has also added persistent subject tracking for photos and video, letting the camera keep following a person even if they temporarily disappear behind someone else in a crowd.Another feature aimed at photographers is Apple Reference Image. When Reference mode is used, the camera captures signed sensor data that Private Cloud Compute turns into what Apple describes as an “unalterable reference image.” You can then view the reference alongside the main photograph in the Photos app.The idea is to compare the original sensor-derived reference with the photograph and identify whether changes have been made. Apple says the feature is intended to address image authenticity, particularly for photographers and photojournalists.Apple is also adding metadata support and upcoming support for the SynthID standard to help identify images generated or edited with AI.
What variable aperture actually changes for iPhone users
For someone who simply opens the Camera app and takes pictures, it may not change much. The phone can choose the aperture automatically, just as it already handles most exposure decisions. For people who shoot deliberately, the change is more useful.A wider f/1.48 setting can help in darker scenes. Stopping down can keep more of a group or landscape in focus. Manual aperture control can also be combined with shutter-speed control to create particular motion effects.It can even produce optical effects that fixed-aperture smartphone cameras cannot reproduce in the same way, including changes in how bright points of light appear at narrower apertures.But four aperture settings don’t turn the iPhone into a dedicated interchangeable-lens camera. The sensor remains small compared with most conventional cameras, and the amount of natural optical background blur depends heavily on the distance between the camera, subject, and background.For many portraits, Apple’s computational Portrait mode will still produce a stronger and more controllable background-blur effect.The same is true for long exposures in bright daylight. The f/1.48-to-f/4.0 range gives photographers more room, but it does not remove the physical limits imposed by available light.That is probably the right way to look at the iPhone 18 Pro’s variable aperture. It gives the camera one more physical control over exposure and focus, while the sensor and software continue to determine what ultimately reaches the screen.For casual users, most of that will happen automatically. For photographers and videographers who want to decide how the shot is captured, the four aperture settings and Pro Controls make the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max considerably more flexible than a fixed-aperture iPhone.
