Sometimes, the right gift, at the right time, can turn into something that thousands can benefit from. Just like the 100 acres of land a Texas family gifted to the City of Odessa, which is becoming a $145 million sports and recreation hub. The construction work will hit another major milestone next month, with a topping-out ceremony scheduled for October 7 to mark the progress on the transformational project. The complex will function as both a neighbourhood recreation hub and a tournament destination. The complex includes 30 indoor courts and 22 outdoor fields for leagues and pick-up play. Regionally, the facility has enough capacity to host simultaneous competitions, which means it can draw tournament traffic from across the state. The amphitheatre adds a civic gathering space that serves concerts and community events. The 100-acre ranch land will be part training centre, part competition venue and part community park.
A Texas family’s gift
In May 2023, the Bell family in Texas generously donated 100 acres of land at 7777 N. Faudree Road, around the intersection of North Faudree Road and Yukon Road. Their gift came along with a vision. The family wanted the residents of Odessa to have something the area didn’t have before: a beautiful space for sports and community gathering. In January 2026, the project had moved from concept to construction. City leaders, the Bell family and community partners came together for the official groundbreaking and kickoff of the $145 million Odessa Sports Complex and Amy Bell Memorial Park. Ellen and Larry Bell, who led the initiative, later pledged an additional $3.6 million towards the Amy Bell Memorial Children’s Park section, called ‘Amy’s Park’, expanding the project’s reach further to younger residents. What started as a family’s decision to donate ranch land has become a significant municipal investment and also a haven for residents.
The topping-out ceremony on October 7
The topping-out ceremony scheduled for October 7 marks an important milestone in the construction, as the steel structure reaches its full height. With the foundation and main structural work largely complete, construction will move to the next phase. The ceremony will also recognise the progress made and the team’s efforts to keep the large-scale project on schedule and within budget.Putting together 100 acres of land into a functional sports complex requires precision. The city partnered with Sports Facilities Companies to design the layout. Paul Stresing Associates handled the design work. Lee Lewis Construction manages the build. Sports Med Properties brought expertise in how courts and fields should be engineered for different sports. The upcoming event will provide an opportunity to recognise and appreciate this team effort. “The City of Odessa looks forward to celebrating this important construction milestone as work continues on a facility that will become an important part of Odessa’s future,” the officials said in a release.Whether the complex draws the anticipated tournament traffic and serves the community as intended will depend partly on execution over the next year. For now, October 7 marks the moment when that vision moves from blueprint to steel and concrete. The topping-out in October 2026 means crews have completed major structural work. Interior finishes, court installation and systems testing follow. The facility is likely 12–18 months away from opening day.
What the complex has to offer
The Odessa Sports Complex at 7777 N. Faudree Road (Yukon Road and Faudree Road area) will be a game-changer for Texas residents. A facility of this size typically serves two populations: locals who use it regularly for recreation and leagues, and visitors who travel to tournaments. The indoor facilities of the complex include 10 basketball courts, 20 volleyball courts and several pickleball courts, along with dedicated fitness and training areas. The outdoor amenities include 10 rectangular fields for soccer and football. There are 12 other diamond fields for baseball and softball. Along with that, a community amphitheatre will be set up for events and performances. Odessa’s youth can now train and compete without travelling hours for competitions. All of these facilities will draw teams from several states. This also means more hotel stays, restaurant traffic and promising economic growth for the area.
