$445 million and counting: Elon Musk goes all in for Republicans ahead of US midterms

Elon Musk has contributed more than $445 million to political groups during the current US election cycle, emerging as one of the biggest-ever donors to super political action committees (super PACs), according to a report.Musk’s donations have helped widen the Republican Party’s fundraising advantage ahead of the November midterm elections, which are projected to be the most expensive elections ever in the US.Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings show Musk contributed $77 million to America PAC in the first two weeks of October. Since relaunching the political group in July, he has given it $355 million, averaging $3.6 million a day, Bloomberg reported. The Republican Party, its congressional super PACs and US president Donald Trump’s MAGA Inc. had raised $2.1 billion through October 14, compared with $1.4 billion raised by corresponding Democratic committees.Musk’s political spending has supported Republican candidates across several contests, including the Texas Senate race involving Attorney General Ken Paxton and Democratic candidate James Talarico. His America PAC has also spent money on voter outreach through canvassing, digital media, text messages and printed material.Talarico’s campaign has criticised the billionaire’s financial influence. An advertisement released by the campaign said: “He knows that if his millions drag the most corrupt politician in Texas across the finish line, Ken Paxton will owe him everything. So let’s remind Elon: Texas is not for sale.”On Friday, Trump said on Truth Social he planned to spend $400 million to $500 million by election day, then less than two weeks away. Filings show $225 million of recent spending went through super PACs No Going Back and Safety & Affordability.Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Republican megadonors, including Stephen Wynn, Stephen Schwarzman and Diane Hendricks, contributed millions to Trump-aligned MAGA Inc., which had raised roughly $450 million this cycle and held $164 million in available cash.

What are the US election contribution limits?

US federal election law sets limits on how much individuals and political committees can contribute directly to candidates and certain political organisations. However, super PACs operate under different rules and can accept unlimited contributions. This distinction helps explain how Musk can give hundreds of millions of dollars to political groups despite restrictions on direct donations to candidates.According to the US Federal Election Commission’s (FEC) limits for the 2025–2026 election cycle, individuals can contribute up to $3,500 per election to a federal candidate. The limit applies separately to each election, so the primary and general elections have separate limits.Individuals can contribute up to $5,000 per year to a conventional political action committee (PAC), $10,000 annually in combined contributions to state, district and local party committees, and $44,300 per year to each national party committee. They can also contribute up to $132,900 per year to each eligible additional national party account, earmarked for specific expenses such as presidential nominating conventions, election recounts and legal proceedings and party headquarters buildings, under the Federal Election Commission’s 2025–2026 limits.Super PACs, formally known as independent-expenditure-only committees, can accept unlimited contributions from individuals, corporations, labour organisations and other political committees to fund independent political spending. However, they cannot contribute directly to federal candidates, and their spending must not be coordinated with candidates’ campaigns.

Why Musk’s donations matter

Musk has substantial business interests in companies including Tesla and SpaceX, which are subject to federal regulation. Bloomberg reported that his political spending could also influence the balance of power in Congress, particularly if Democrats win control of the House of Representatives.
