NEW DELHI: Delhi police on Friday registered an FIR against unknown persons following a complaint by a Kashmiri youth who was allegedly assaulted at Connaught Place during as the Congress was protesting against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.The Kashmiri youth, who said he was a fan of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was allegedly roughed up by protesters at Connaught Place. The protesters claimed he had verbally abused Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, as cited by ANI.The youth denied abusing Gandhi and said, “I raised a question – when the Opposition wins, then there are no problems with the EVMs. Who brought EVMs? It was Rajiv Gandhi in 1998. I am from Kashmir. I did not abuse Rahul Gandhi. I am a citizen of this country and I will not let this country become another Nepal.”Delhi Police has stepped up security across the national capital ahead of the INDIA bloc’s Friday march to Rashtrapati Bhavan, where opposition leaders are expected to seek President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention over their demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, sources said.More than 20,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across central Delhi, with security strengthened around Parliament, Connaught Place, Jantar Mantar and other sensitive locations. Police teams are monitoring potential gathering points and routes leading to Rashtrapati Bhavan, while additional Central Armed Police Forces personnel have been mobilised to guard key roads. Pickets and barricades have also been placed at strategic points.The heightened security comes ahead of a proposed Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) protest on Saturday against Kumar. Delhi Police has warned that the gathering would be illegal while restrictions under Section 163 remain in force.Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrishti Pandey said protests were not permitted at Jantar Mantar or any other location during this period and warned that unauthorised gatherings would invite legal action.

“Section 163 is in effect, meaning protests are not permitted—neither at Jantar Mantar nor anywhere else. Any gathering will be considered illegal, and we would be compelled to take necessary legal action against it,” Pandey said.She urged people not to participate in the proposed protest, asking them to prioritise their safety and that of their families.
