Minors used to deter police action at CJP’s Mumbai protest? NHRC seeks report

NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Saturday issued a notice over the alleged involvement of minors in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led protest in Mumbai on Friday. The NHRC sought an Action Taken Report on allegations that minors were placed “strategically” at the protest site to deter police from taking action against demonstrators. On Friday, the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, youth pressure group CJP held a protest at Mumbai’s iconic Shivaji Park, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over an alleged rift between him and the two Election Commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi. The Indian Express reported on September 23 that Sandhu and Joshi had raised objections 14 times over the past 10 months to decisions they claimed were taken without their knowledge, including those concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
