The US government has ruled out working with China on artificial intelligence. The US President Donald Trump made it clear that he does not want to cooperate with China on AI governance. Trump’s reasoning is that it would help Beijing catch up with American companies. His comments come less than a week after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s high-profile US visit last week. The statement comes as pressure is mounting on the US administration to address risks posed by AI, after OpenAI and Anthropic reported that their AI agents had gone rogue and hacked into other companies’ systems.Trump made the comments shortly before hosting AI executives for lunch at the White House. The American President told the audience that AI had come up only briefly in his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who visited Washington last week. “A lot of people say, let’s do it together with China, but then they’re going to be able to immediately gain access to things that we know that they don’t know,” Trump said. He added, “We’re leading now over China and everyone else, and I want to keep it that way.”“Whoever wins AI … whoever wins ‘SI,’ whoever wins super intelligence, wins. That’s the group that wins, and we’re leading now over China by a lot and everyone else, and we’re going to keep it that way,” Trump said in his address last week to the United Nations General Assembly. “I’m not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the Industrial Revolution — many say bigger than the Industrial Revolution or the internet itself — and we will be very careful,” he said.
