A Punjabi man stabbed in the neck in Mississauga, Canada, has died from his injuries, while a woman has been charged in connection with the attack.The deceased has been identified as Jagjit Singh Sandhu. His sister, Jaspreet Kaur, said the stabbing took place on September 6 outside a shelter on Dundas Street East.According to Kaur, Sandhu intervened when another Punjabi man was allegedly subjected to racist remarks by the boyfriend of a woman staying at the shelter. She said the boyfriend confronted the Indian man and told him to return to his country.Kaur alleged that Sandhu helped the man leave the area, following which an argument broke out between Sandhu and the boyfriend.During the confrontation, a woman allegedly approached Sandhu from behind and stabbed him on the right side of his neck, Kaur said.The injury damaged major blood vessels, causing severe blood loss and cutting off oxygen to his brain. Sandhu was taken to hospital and later declared brain dead, according to his sister.Peel Regional Police did not identify the victim by name in their statement. Police said officers from the 12 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau responded to a stabbing on Dundas Street East at around 5:30pm on September 6 and found an adult male with a serious stab wound to the neck.The man was taken to hospital in critical condition, police said.Investigators initially arrested a man who had been involved in an altercation with the victim. Police later determined that he was not responsible for the stabbing and released him.Police subsequently identified an adult woman as the suspected attacker, police said. She had fled the area on foot before officers arrived.On September 7, police located 42-year-old Lorena Sanchez of Mississauga, arrested her and charged her with attempted murder. She was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.Kaur has questioned the handling of the case, alleging that police did not contact the family for three days after the incident and that repeated calls from relatives went unanswered.She also alleged that the incident and Sandhu’s identity were not adequately reported in the media.Kaur said the incident has raised concerns about the safety of Indian and Punjabi youngsters in Canada. She urged the Punjabi and Indian communities to stand together and speak out against what she described as worsening law-and-order conditions.
