Food scare at Surat boarding school: 75 students fall ill, 12 hospitalised
At least seventy-five students fell sick with suspected food poisoning at a Surat boarding school.

SURAT: At least 75 students of a private boarding school in Surat fell sick with suspected food poisoning, with 12 of them requiring hospitalisation, an official said on Sunday.All the students are out of danger, he said.The students, who reside in the hostel of P P Savani School in Abrama area, began developing symptoms including diarrhoea and vomiting from Saturday night, said Surat Municipal Corporation Medical Health Officer P H Umrigar.Of the 12 students admitted to hospital, nine are girls and all are aged between 15 and 17 years. Four have since been discharged after treatment, while the condition of the remaining students is stable, Umrigar said.Following the incident, the SMC health department initiated action, the civic body said in a release.Teams from the Food, Health and Sanitation departments inspected the school hostel and collected four food samples, which were sent for testing, the civic body said.A mobile medical team is also conducting health check-ups of other students staying at the hostel.Around 2,200 students and 300 staff members are housed at the boarding school. All of them had consumed the same food on Saturday, Umrigar said.
