California Governor Gavin Newsom has put his sprawling Sacramento-area mansion on the market for $7.5 million, months before his second term comes to an end in January 2027. The Spanish-style estate in Fair Oaks features seven bedrooms, 12 bathrooms and a host of luxury amenities, including a tennis court, swimming pool and a 5,000-bottle wine cellar.The 8.2-acre property, located in an exclusive enclave near the American River, was listed on Monday by Sotheby’s International Realty agents Matthew Hindy and Nick Sadek. Newsom reportedly paid $3.7 million for the home in late 2018, shortly after winning his first term as California governor.Spread across roughly 12,600 square feet, the Santa Barbara-inspired residence is set beyond a gated driveway and features beige stucco walls and a terracotta roof.

Inside, the home includes a grand entry foyer with high ceilings and exposed wood beams, a fireside living room with sliding glass doors, a wet bar, formal dining room and a bright kitchen with an eat-in island and butler’s pantry. The property also has a breakfast nook and family room.

The mansion’s secluded primary suite includes dual walk-in closets and a spacious bathroom with two showers, two water closets and a travertine soaking tub. An outdoor wellness area features a cold plunge pool and hot tub.

Other amenities include a study lined with bookshelves, a game room, gym, 5,000-bottle wine cellar and a separate guest casita with its own kitchen. The landscaped grounds feature a swimming pool and full-size tennis court.

Newsom and his family previously called it home
Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, moved into the Fair Oaks property in 2019 after briefly living at California’s historic governor’s mansion in Sacramento. At the time, a spokesperson described the Fair Oaks estate as being “more kid-friendly”, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The family has since divided its time between Sacramento and Marin County, where they own another property. In 2024, the Newsoms enrolled their children in Marin County schools.The Fair Oaks residence has also been the backdrop to several political moments. In 2020, protesters chained themselves to the property’s fence to demonstrate against rising deaths in California prisons during the coronavirus pandemic.The mansion later drew attention in 2024 when Newsom hosted a political fundraiser there for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who was campaigning at the time as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate.
Presidential ambitions add to speculation around sale
Newsom is openly considering a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. His decision to sell the Fair Oaks property comes as he prepares to leave the governor’s office in January 2027 after two terms.The Newsoms are now transitioning back toward the Bay Area, with the governor’s political future likely to remain a focus as speculation builds around a potential 2028 presidential campaign.Newsom bought the house for $3.7 million in 2018 and is now asking $7.5 million for it. If he gets that price, he would make $3.8 million more than what he paid.
