As tech giants and aerospace startups race to launch space-based data centers, scientists are warning that hundreds of thousands of new satellites could transform Earth into a ringed planet, drastically escalating light pollution and disrupting the night sky. In a new paper titled “Rings in the Sky,” University of Regina astronomy professor Samantha Lawler, alongside Aaron Boley of the University of British Columbia and Hanno Rein of the University of Toronto, warned about the severe visual and environmental impact of proposed orbital data center mega-constellations.“What would the sky look like if companies actually launched the tens of thousands up to one million “AI data center” satellites that they have asked for? Well, the short answer is, horrifying. The long answer is… this paper!” Lawler wrote in a social media post highlighting the research. He wrote in another post, “Here’s the future that the techbros want. Earth as a ringed planet.”The warning comes as companies—including SpaceX, Blue Origin, and startups such as Starcloud and Cowboy Space propose plans that could collectively send up to 1.2 million satellites into orbit. The projected figure dwarfs the roughly 16,000 active satellites currently orbiting Earth by more than 75 times, raising severe concerns regarding space debris, orbital congestion, collision risks, and optical interference for ground-based astronomy.SpaceX has touted its proposed “Starmind” data center constellation as an eco-friendly alternative to ground facilities, arguing that harvesting continuous solar energy in orbit reduces carbon footprints and relieves pressure on terrestrial power grids. Other industry players are similarly targeting space-based solar power to fuel high-performance GPUs equipped with specialized liquid-cooling systems.
What makes scientists unhappy with Space datacenters
However, scientists point out that to continuously harvest solar energy, these orbiting data centers must occupy specific “sun-synchronous” orbits along the polar terminator—the moving line that divides day and night on Earth.By aligning along this line, entire constellations can perpetually face the sun while circling the globe over the poles. According to the researchers, this specific trajectory will inevitably create dense, artificial ring structures around the planet.“These systems would produce large ring structures with each ring passing through the sky twice a day. The largest impacts are expected to occur during winter, where ring structures could be seen sweeping through otherwise dark skies,” the authors wrote in their paper. Because the data centers require massive solar arrays and heavy hardware, their physical size will make them exceptionally reflective.Simulations and visual models created by Lawler demonstrate that constellations from SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Cowboy Space would be prominently visible from the ground, particularly during twilight hours at 6 p.m. and again around 3 a.m. Blue Origin’s proposed “Sunrise” constellation, which spans two rings, would remain almost constantly visible during night hours in northern polar regions.The findings echo growing concerns across the scientific community regarding the rapid commercialization of Low Earth Orbit. Speaking to Space.com last month, Hugh Lewis, a professor of astronautics and space debris expert at the University of Birmingham, offered a stark assessment of the proposed constellations: “The impact on the night sky would be absolutely catastrophic.”
