It was an ordinary walk home from school in Tiruvannamalai, a small temple town in Tamil Nadu. Vinisha Umashankar was 12 years old. She was walking past a street ironing vendor, the kind of vendor most people walk past every day without a second thought, when she noticed something that stopped her completely. The vendor was throwing away burnt charcoal on the side of the road. She came up with the idea when she was 12, then worked with engineers to create a prototype. But before the prototype, before the awards, before COP26, there was just a 12-year-old girl standing on a street in Tamil Nadu, asking a question that most adults had never thought to ask. Why is this still happening? And what can I do about it?

The math that shocked her

Vinisha did not walk away from that question. She walked toward it. She went home and started counting. How many ironing vendors were in her neighbourhood? How much charcoal did each one use? And if she multiplied that by the number of vendors across all of India, what would the number look like? She saw how smoke causes lung disease among vendors. And she was shocked to learn of the connection between charcoal and deforestation; each year industrial quantities of trees are felled to make charcoal.

India has approximately 10 million street ironing vendors. Each uses roughly five kilograms of charcoal every day. The pollution, the deforestation, the health damage to the vendors themselves the scale of the problem was staggering. And Vinisha, who was 12 years old and had never built anything like this before, decided she was going to solve it.

For the next six months, Vinisha did something remarkable. She taught herself. She read college-level physics textbooks to understand how solar panels work. She studied engineering principles. She worked with engineers to develop her idea. And she designed Iron Max a solar-powered ironing cart that replaces charcoal entirely with clean energy from the sun. Five hours of sunshine power the iron for six hours; a win for the environment is also a win for vendors. But Vinisha went further. She added phone charging ports to the cart so vendors could earn additional income by charging people’s phones while they waited for their clothes. Extra mobility means they can reach more customers.The numbers tell the story. A vendor’s monthly income could increase from around Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000. Nearly 1.8 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions could be prevented every year, per vendor. And 10 million vendors across India could be transformed from contributors to deforestation into participants in the clean energy revolution.

Vinisha received the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam IGNITE Award from the National Innovation Foundation India, an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Then came the Children’s Climate Prize in 2020. Then came the Earthshot Prize; she was only a school student when she was selected as the youngest Earthshot Prize 2021 finalist. Named among 15 finalists from over 750 nominees for Prince William’s inaugural environmental prize, she was invited to COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland.And there, on November 2, 2021, a 15-year-old girl from a small temple town in Tamil Nadu stood before world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prince William, and gave a five-minute speech that stopped the room completely. “We have every reason to be angry. But I have no time for anger. I want to act. I am not just a girl from India. I am a girl from Earth, and I am proud to be so.” Her address to world leaders at COP26 went viral and resulted in over 5,000 articles across 6 continents and 93 global markets. The room gave her a standing ovation.

Born in 2007 in Tiruvannamalai, her business consultant father and school teacher mother realised how fascinated she was by science and math as a child. They are the wind beneath her wings and her biggest support system. “My parents bought me many books to read and explore,” reveals Vinisha, who often accompanies her parents to museums, zoological parks, botanical gardens, palaces, and forts. Two parents who noticed what their daughter loved. Who fed her curiosity instead of redirecting it. Who let a child who loved science and mathematics follow that love wherever it led. It led to a solar ironing cart. It led to COP26. It led to 5,000 articles across six continents.

The reminder every parent and child needs

Vinisha Umashankar was 12 years old when she had the idea that changed everything. She was not a genius in the way the word is usually used. She was a curious girl who paid attention to something most people ignored, asked why, went home and did the math, and then spent six months teaching herself what she needed to know to fix it. “I hope my innovation motivates students to innovate on products that could help protect the environment for future generations. I am happy that the solar ironing cart is my little contribution towards an ambitious goal.” A 12-year-old girl. A street vendor. A pile of charcoal. And a question that nobody else stopped to ask.
