GURGAON: Traffic on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway (NH-48) came to a standstill for more than two hours on Saturday after a high-voltage power transmission line snapped and fell across the carriageway near Gurugram, narrowly missing vehicles and pedestrians. The incident forced authorities to immediately stop traffic movement in both directions as a precautionary measure, leading to massive congestion on one of the busiest stretches connecting Delhi and Jaipur, according to news agency PTI.The closure disrupted traffic on the highway for several hours, leaving commuters stranded in long queues amid intense heat. Within minutes, a traffic jam stretching around 4-5 kilometres developed between Narsinghpur and the Kherki Daula toll plaza. As the incident occurred over the weekend, the disruption affected a large number of travellers and motorists, causing widespread inconvenience and slowing traffic movement across the corridor.Senior district administration officials, police personnel and electricity department teams reached the spot soon after the incident. Police cordoned off the area and advised people to stay away from the live transmission line while technical teams worked to secure the site and remove the cable.Electricity department staff took nearly two hours to clear the snapped wire from the highway. Traffic movement gradually resumed after the cable was removed and the area was declared safe. The Gurugram Traffic Police later issued an advisory urging commuters travelling towards Delhi to take alternate routes and follow instructions issued by traffic personnel.“Due to a broken high-voltage power line near the Indian Oil Petrol Pump, Narsinghpur, traffic has been temporarily stopped on both the Delhi-Jaipur and Jaipur-Delhi carriageways of NH-48 and the service road. Commuters are advised to use the alternate routes as mentioned and follow the directions of traffic police,” the advisory said.A senior electricity department official said the snapped line was a 66-kV transmission line running from Harsaru to Sector 35.“The wire has been removed from the road and traffic is moving smoothly now, but many areas are facing power outages. Electricity department employees are working to repair the line,” the official said.According to a senior traffic police officer, traffic on NH-48 was affected near the Narsinghpur Foot Over Bridge after the transmission line cable snapped unexpectedly.Vehicles travelling from Delhi towards Jaipur were diverted through SPR Road using the cloverleaf and Basai Road via Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk. Traffic moving from Jaipur towards Delhi was rerouted through the Dwarka Expressway and SPR Road using the cloverleaf near Kherki Daula before rejoining NH-48 through Rajiv Chowk and Hero Honda Chowk, the officer added.
