SI in custody for dowry harassment, assault on wife

Bengaluru: A sub-inspector attached to the Bengaluru city police control room was arrested on Tuesday evening after his wife accused him of dowry harassment, physical assault, criminal intimidation and attempting to attack her and her father with a machete. The accused, Bhairappa KS, was arrested after his wife lodged a complaint with Kengeri police. According to her, police initially registered only a non-cognisable report (NCR) Monday, forcing her to approach senior police officers seeking registration of an FIR. Following their intervention, an FIR was registered and Bhairappa was arrested. She said she got married to Bhairappa five years ago, they live on Magadi Main Road and have a 3-year-old daughter. She claimed that while the first couple of years of their marriage were peaceful, the sub-inspector’s behaviour changed thereafter. Bhairappa repeatedly abused and assaulted her, often after returning home under the influence of alcohol, and demanded lakhs in dowry, claiming that neither a house nor a site was given to him at the time of marriage. She alleged that Bhairappa frequently forced her to bring money from her parents and assaulted her whenever she failed to meet his demands. He repeatedly left home after arguments, packing his belongings and leaving her and their child behind. She also accused the SI of bringing other women to their house and maintaining relationships with several women. Despite being married, he promised marriage to other women, exchanged romantic messages with them and threatened some of them when they rejected his advances. A few of those women later contacted her and complained about his behaviour. She also alleged that Bhairappa frequently cast baseless doubts on her, leading to frequent domestic disputes. She said Bhairappa threatened to eliminate her and her father by using criminals. The latest confrontation took place on July 12, when Revathi’s father visited the couple to mediate following a domestic dispute. During the argument, Bhairappa allegedly attempted to assault her father with a machete. She alleged that despite calling the 112 emergency helpline, no immediate action was taken. When she approached Kengeri police, officers only issued an NCR, allegedly because some of his batchmates are posted at the station.Bhairappa was previously suspended after the Lokayukta registered a case against him while he was serving at Subramanyapura police station in an alleged bribery case in June last year. She said her father bought two cars and gave money multiple times as demanded by her husband. Even then, he was not taking care of the basic needs of her and their daughter.Deputy commissioner of police (southwest division) Anitha B Hadannavar said since the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Tavarekere police station in Bengaluru South district, the case will be transferred there for investigation.
