How an extortion bid ended in gun battle that killed 4 gangsters in Gurgaon; over 60 rounds fired during encounter

GURGAON: In one of the most high-profile and sensational police encounters in Haryana in recent years, four alleged shooters linked to fugitive gangster Deepak Nandal were killed and a fifth was critically injured after a fierce gun battle with the Gurgaon Police Crime Branch in Sushant Lok Phase-2 on Thursday evening. Three policemen also sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire.According to police, more than 60 rounds were fired during the encounter. The accused allegedly fired around 40 rounds while targeting the residence of a 36-year-old businessman who had been receiving extortion demands running into multiple crores from the gang.

Police teams, acting on prior intelligence about the threat, reached the spot while the firing was still underway, leading to a live encounter with the armed suspects.Police said the accused were travelling in a rented black Scorpio SUV and opened life-threatening fire at the Crime Branch teams when asked to surrender. After warning the suspects and carrying out warning fire, the police retaliated in self-defence when the accused continued firing and attempted to escape.The Scorpio was rented from Rohtak.All five alleged shooters sustained bullet injuries in the exchange. They were taken to a private super-speciality hospital, where doctors declared four of them dead. The fifth accused remains under treatment in critical condition.Three Crime Branch personnel who suffered bullet injuries during the operation were immediately shifted to hospital. Police said all three are under medical supervision and their condition is being monitored.Investigators said the businessman, his wife and domestic staff were inside the house when the attack took place. Although no one inside the house was injured, bullets shattered window panes and struck walls inside the residence, triggering panic in the upscale neighbourhood as residents heard repeated gunfire.Police recovered five pistols from the spot, including three foreign-made weapons. The rented Scorpio used by the accused was riddled with bullets during the encounter.Senior officers, including the DCP (Crime) Hitesh Yadav and DCP (East) Sandeep Kumar reached the scene soon after the incident. Crime scene experts, forensic teams and other investigating officers examined the site and collected evidence.Police said the identities of the deceased and injured accused, their criminal records and further details about the recovered weapons would be shared after verification. A case has been registered and further legal proceedings are underway.
