The Telangana government on Sunday distributed ownership documents under its two-bedroom housing scheme and announced plans to construct one lakh new housing units for the urban poor in Hyderabad.The scheme is designed to provide free two-bedroom houses to eligible economically weaker families, particularly those without permanent housing. According to the state government, the objective is to improve living conditions and reduce housing insecurity.Presiding over the distribution of two-bedroom housing pattas in Hyderabad, Telangana minister Mohammad Azharuddin said the government was committed to expanding housing benefits for vulnerable sections.Expressing satisfaction over the rollout of the scheme, Azharuddin credited the leadership of the chief minister for taking the project forward.“I am delighted that today we have handed over two-bedroom houses,” Azharuddin said.“I would like to thank the CM for carrying this work forward. We have provided homes to many people here, including those with special needs and individuals with disabilities. We have recognised and addressed these special cases,” he added.The distribution event marked the formal handover of allotment documents to beneficiaries, with the minister saying the process had been designed to ensure that marginalised citizens received priority.
What is the Telangana 2BHK Housing Scheme ?
The Telangana 2BHK Housing Scheme is a state government welfare programme that provides free two-bedroom houses to poor families. Unlike many housing schemes that require beneficiaries to contribute financially, the homes under this programme are constructed and allotted by the government without requiring beneficiary contribution.Each housing unit generally includes:
- Two bedrooms
- A hall
- A kitchen
- Two toilets
The scheme covers both rural and urban areas, with apartments being constructed in cities such as Hyderabad where land availability is limited.
Who is eligible?
According to the scheme guidelines, beneficiaries generally include:
- Economically weaker families living below the poverty line.
- Families that do not own a permanent house.
- Residents of Telangana who meet the prescribed income and residency criteria.
- Priority is given to socially vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, widows, senior citizens, Scheduled
- Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other deserving categories identified by the government.
Beneficiaries are selected through verification by district authorities and local bodies.
One lakh new houses planned
Meanwhile, Telangana transport minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced plans to expand the programme, saying the government intends to construct 100,000 housing unitsSpeaking during a recent distribution event, Prabhakar said the government was focusing on both housing and long-term urban development.“Under the leadership of the Hyderabad District Collector, we have handed over the necessary documents for projects that had been pending for years,” Prabhakar said.“We have decided to construct 100,000 housing units for the poor in Hyderabad, creating homes where employment opportunities exist, and have identified land for this purpose,” he added.Prabhakar also said the government was working to resolve long-pending administrative issues to ensure transparent distribution of housing benefits. According to him, the proposed expansion is intended to improve access to affordable housing for low-income families while supporting urban development in Hyderabad.
