Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes that some artificial intelligence (AI) companies are damaging public trust around the technology. The chief executive of the software giant thinks that these companies are doing so by promoting negative narratives about AI. He said that companies that are doing this, suggesting that AI will eliminate large numbers of knowledge-worker jobs while simultaneously celebrating the development of such technologies, are sending the wrong message to Americans.Speaking on a podcast with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, Nadella argued that the way some AI leaders have discussed the technology has created scepticism among the public and made it harder for the industry to gain support. Hoffman shared a post on the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), which included a clip from the podcast and wrote, “Satya Nadella on the trust AI companies need to build with America.”Nadella said, “People don’t believe us, and rightfully so, I’ve come to the conclusion that, and this is one of those places where, quite frankly, our industry, even the way we have talked about it. I mean, when you go out and say, ‘Hey, all economic opportunity will go away for knowledge workers, or, you know, white collar jobs are gone.’ And then you’re saying, ‘I’m excited about building that technology.’ Why would anyone want you to be successful? I mean, I don’t want you to be successful. I mean, this just makes no social sense.”According to Nadella, AI companies need to focus on demonstrating practical benefits rather than making broad claims about the future of work. He suggested that public confidence can only be rebuilt through tangible outcomes that people can see and experience in their communities.

Why Nadella is calling for tangible benefits from AI investments

During the conversation, Nadella said the industry has reached a point where many people no longer trust what AI leaders are saying.“There needs to be real, tangible, practical, well-understood outcomes. So, I feel now, when you have someone in a college commencement be booed because they’re saying AI means we have now crossed over to people [who] don’t believe us. And rightfully so. So therefore, I think what we need to do now is time to do the hard work,” he added.He pointed to data centre development as an example of how technology companies can earn trust by delivering measurable local benefits.“If you’re building a data centre, let’s make sure that the community believes that this data centre is great for them. It’s for their tax base, for their community efforts, their real estate value and their schools. Can’t be, again, like, oh, I said something. No, it has to be real, right? That’s kind of what the way we are on social publication,” Nadella further explained.
