NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday sought responses from the Centre, Delhi government and Delhi Police on a plea challenging the de-notification of Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site.Earlier this week, the ministry of home affairs de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site and identified three alternative venues for demonstrations: Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground. In a notice issued by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar, the police said the Ministry of Home Affairs had constituted a committee to examine suitable alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations. The decision was taken based on the committee’s recommendations.

The decision to de-notify Jantar Mantar came against the backdrop of the Cockroach Janta Party’s planned demonstration on October 10.However, a Centre-led crackdown largely curtailed the protest, with over 7,000 people detained, including several political leaders. The Centre also deployed 35,000 security personnel and imposed restrictions on metro services and internet access.
