Mackenzie Scott recently set a new milestone in her philanthropy by donating more than $1 billion to historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) so far. One of the notable donations made by the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has helped abolish $40 billion in medical debt across 50 US states. Mackenzie Scott, who has sold more than half of her Amazon shares, gave $50 million to Undue Medical Debt—then known as RIP Medical Debt in 2020. This was followed by $30 million in 2022, and a rare third donation in December 2024. As stated in a Fortune report, her gifts so far have abolished more than $40 billion in medical debt across all 50 states.
How Mackenzie Scott’s donations helped erase medical debt
The process is simple but has a major impact. Hospitals and doctors often sell unpaid medical bills in bulk at heavily reduced prices. Undue Medical Debt, that Scott donated to, buys these bills at similar discounts and cancels them instead of trying to collect the money from patients. This means every $10 donated can help erase around $1,000 in medical debt, the Fortune report says.
How Mackenzie Scott’s philanthropy differs
While Mackenzie Scott has been making headlines for her large donations, she has also received criticism for her philanthropy style. Reportedly, Scott’s charitable work differs from other billionaires in that there are no-strings attached. Additionally, Mackenzie Scott’s grants have no spending deadlines and minimal reporting requirements.World’s richest man Elon Musk has also criticised Scott’s philanthropy. More recently, Musk responded “Sadly yes” to a post claiming that Scott was “spending it making the world a worse place.” In 2024, he shared a post that appeared to reference Macknezie Scott without naming her directly. “Super rich ex-wives who hate their former spouse should be listed among ‘Reasons that Western Civilization died,” he then wrote. Musk later deleted the post.
